Instant Text V Pro – 5.44 – Revision 544
Revision 544 of Instant Text V Pro applies to all releases of
Version V, starting with the first one issued in June 2002, and updates them to
the new Release 5.44. The revision includes changes done in the
prior revisions 501 through 533.
Applying Revision 544
If you are installing from a new 5.44 CD, skip to the next
section. You have the most recent version and there is no need to apply any
revision.
If you have an earlier version, download the revision Rev544P.exe installer from
the Textware Solutions site and save it to your computer, for example, to the
InstText\temp folder. Running this installer will update your current version to
Release 5.44. If the revision fails for any reason, reinstall
Instant Text from your CD before you apply the revision.
To be sure that the revision has been applied, check the build
date in Help/About Instant Text and it should now indicate 2007-05-11.
(If you want, you can now safely delete the installer.)
No glossary is modified by the revision. But to be on the safe
side, always create backup copies of your glossaries before installing any
software.
What is new in Version 5.44
The following list shows the Instant Text V Pro improvements
and corrections done in revisions 520, 521, 522, 523, 530, 533, and 544. Changes
done in these revisions are marked in color as [520], [521], [522], [523], [530], [533], or [544].
- Support for Internet Explorer 7 [544]
The new version provides full support for Internet
Explorer 7 and all applications using IE7 like, for instance, Bayscribe or
Webmedx. In particular, long entries or command entries will expand as before,
and the cursor is again visible all the time.
- Improved usage of date macros [544]
The
shortdate and longdate glossary command entries take the user customization
into account. If you change the date settings in the Control Panel under
Regional and Language Options, the date macros will expand according to your
settings.
- Compilation option for hyphenated words improved [544]
When the option Hyphens Separate Words is checked,
the short form of a hyphenated compound word is generated with the initials of
the words before and after the hyphen not only when adding a new glossary
entry, but also when Instant Text compiles a glossary. The short form
generated for direct-current cardioversion will be dcc instead of dc.
- Miscellaneous improvements [544]
- The Alt = window will always show the text that you have selected.
- Elimination of spurious characters.
- Improved refresh of the Glossary List.
- Support for Spheris TWS 3.8 [533]
The
new version provides full support for Spheris TWS 3.8.
- Improved support for Cerner and DocQscribe [533]
- Support for Multi-Threaded Applications [530]
A number of recent applications are written as
what is technically called "multi-threaded" applications. These include
applications such as the most recent version of Vianeta, Futurenet iType, MT
Scribe, Adobe Acrobat for forms, and several others. Version 5.30 is the first
version of Instant Text that supports multi-threaded applications.
- Support for DOS Applications [530]
The
new version also expands in a DOS window and can be used with applications
such as WordPerfect 5.1. You can use the same Instant Text glossaries as for
Windows applications when linking to a DOS window but there are a few
differences. Formatted entries cannot be used as they require rich text format
but most commands work. Operations such as Alt= that require the clipboard do
not work. This new DOS support capability should help Instant Text users who
occasionally have to work for an account that requires WP 5.1 or similar
programs.
- Reordering the Glossary List [520]
A
new dialog is provided to allow reordering of the glossaries of the Glossary
List. The dialog is now always displayed when you select the menu choice for
Save Active Glossary List.

If you only want to save
the list without reordering it, just click on the Save Glossary
List button.
- Configurations [520] and Settings
[523] and [530]
Configurations allow you to start Instant Text
with different sets of options. You can use them to have different Glossary
Lists or a different number of advisory lines, and so on. Starting Instant
Text with a Configuration file is done with a command line parameter:
C:\InstText\Exe32\ITVPro.exe /Config="C:\InstText\Option\Manual.ini"
For example, you can create a desktop shortcut for Instant
Text and then right-click on the icon and select Properties. Then you can edit
the "Target:" text box to add a Config command line parameter.
See Configurations
for more information on this subject.
Settings provide a more general way to create configurations
for network installations. For more information, system administrators should
email or call Textware technical support.
Version 5.30 adds the ability to use the system parameter
%username% in glossary file names mentioned in the configuration
files. This allows the writing of sections such as:
[Active Glossaries]
Current=Medstart
Singles=E:\User\%username%\Glossary\MedsingleV.glo
ActiveGlossary0=E:\User\%username%\Glossary\Address.glo
- Glossary Selection Keys [520] and
Focus Keys [522]
The keys to be used for
glossary selection and to toggle focus can now be chosen on the Keys Panel of
the Options dialog:

The default choice for
Glossary keys is to use Ctrl+n, where n is a digit. But if you are working
with a system that already uses Ctrl+n for something else, you can select
Shift+Ctrl+n or just the mouse.
The default choice to toggle focus between Instant Text and
the linked application is Ctrl+/ but if you are working with a system that
already uses this combination, you can select Shift+Ctrl+/ or just the mouse.
- Enrich Enhancements [520]
Adjunct
glossaries produced by Enrich are now placed at the end of the main glossary
(they were at the beginning in prior versions). This means that if you
carefully set some "includes" to be at the beginning of the main glossary,
they are not going to be displaced by adjunct glossaries that are created by
Enrich.
In addition, the header format for adjunct glossaries has
changed. Before version 5.2, Enrich produced glossaries with the following
header:
[Glossary $extend 2 7]
This meant that identical headers were produced when doing
several enriches. To avoid this, the new Enrich appends the date and time to
produce unique names of the form:
[Glossary Enrich-2003Jun24-190853 2
7]
The advantage of unique names is that it is now possible to
position an "include" between enrich glossaries (it was not possible before
because the headers were indistinguishable).
- Pasting for Windows 2000 [520]
For
Windows 2000, prior versions showed an occasional hesitation for the first
long expansion following an explicit use of the clipboard. This problem is
solved by version 5.2.
- Multiple Compilation [520]
The
extraction algorithm now separates consecutive files. This makes it more
usable with small individual files, for example, when compiling a folder of
WP5.1 macros. (While the problem existed also for large files it had no real
impact on the glossaries produced.)
- Diacritical Marks [521]
The new version
extends the special treatment for diacritical marks to more applications.
(This is for accented letters when using the US International keyboard
with Instant Text.) In addition, Revision 521 applies the diacritical
treatment strictly when the so-called "Brazilian Keyboard Convention" is
checked in the Special Keys Options.
- New Applications: WordPerfect 11 and 12 [523]
The new version supports the most recent versions
of WordPerfect, WordPerfect 11 and WordPerfect 12.
- New Application: Word 2003 — XML [522]
Full support for MS Word 2003 is provided. In
particular, glossary compilation is now able to compile document files saved
in the XML format. With this extension, Instant Text is now able to compile
all formats supported by MS Word: *.doc, *.htm, and *.xml.
- New Application: Medware — Merit [522]
Revision 522 provides full support for the Merit
system of Medware.
- Vianeta, Opera, CrazyBrowser... [521]
Revision 521 corrects expansion problems that
existed in the earlier 520 for Vianeta, Opera, CrazyBrowser, and a few others
applications that do not support the use of Alt+Numpad sequences to enter
special characters.
- Meditech — Magic [521]
Revision 521
provides proper automatic spacing and capitalization with Meditech. Earlier
versions had a problem with release 2.17 of the Magic terminal interface —
with the T.exe executable. (Spacing or capitalization worked correctly with
all releases of VMagic.exe.)
- Improved handling of Microsoft Outlook [523]
Revision 523 handles Automatic Spacing for
Microsoft Outlook. In addition, it supports Alt= in the plain
text and RTF versions of the message window. The html version of the message
window requires doing a Ctrl C before Alt=.
- Miscellaneous improvements [530]
- Allow continuations of entries entered by expanding a single
letter abbreviation.
- Better tolerance of read-only folders.
- Corrected an error when the merge result file is one of the merged
files.
Version 5.30 — Importer Improvements
Revision 523 — Line Reporter Improvements
- Improved Help [523]
The Line Reporter
Help now includes additional articles on managing journals, journal backup,
and merging journals.
- Line Reporter Settings [523]
When
Instant Text is used in a network installation, the new Settings feature can
be used in conjunction to the Line Count and the Line Reporter to provide
per-user Log folders. For more information, system administrators should email
or call Textware technical support
Prior Changes in Revisions 502
The following improvements and corrections have been done in
the earlier revision 502 and are also part of revision 523:
- Tentative space improvements
Tentative spaces before # and $
characters are no longer absorbed.
- Citrix improvement
Expansion with the caps lock key in Citrix
now produces upper case text, as for other client applications.
- Alt+Numpad characters
Correction of an error in the handling
of characters produced by Alt+Numpad.
- Windows 95 support.
Correction of an error in the handling of
Tab and Enter in Word for Windows 95.
- Delete Dialog
The Delete dialog can now be closed with Enter
(in addition to closing by Alt+D or with the mouse).
- Commands
Correction of a (minor) memory leak that occurred
for expansion of some entries including commands.
- System improvement
It is now possible to specify the product
list file. (This is for system administrators only.)
Prior Changes in Revisions 501
The following improvements and corrections have been done in
the earlier revision 501 and are also part of revision 523:
- Trailing Underscore
You can now tell Instant Text not to add
tentative space(s) after an expansion by ending the entry with an underscore.
For example, if you have the entries:
hp hyper_
...
ifl inflation
Then typing
hp;ifl; should produce hyperinflation
Without the trailing underscore, a tentative space would be
added after hyper and this would produce hyper inflation.
Note that trailing underscores will work best if you are using markers.
- Line Count and Line Reporter
The Line Count and the Line
Reporter now display Unit Costs with four digits after the decimal point. This
means that $0.1225 is now displayed for a Unit Cost of 12.25 cents per line.
Note that this only affects the way it is displayed, as the
cost calculations were already done with this precision.
- Handling of All Caps
Version V expands in all caps if the
short form is typed with the Caps Lock key engaged, or if the short form has
at least two characters and they are all typed in upper case.
This revision adds another condition to avoid capitalizing
for short forms such as A1 or A2: the short form must not contain any
digit.
- Help
The help topics for Includes and Productivity have been
corrected. In addition, the (unwanted) display of Help when editing some field
values in the Line Count dialog was corrected.
- Shortcuts on German and Japanese keyboards.
The handling of
shortcuts such as Alt= and Alt+ has been revised to work on
keyboards that use a different layout for these keys.
- Shortcuts in Outlook Express.
Shortcuts such as
Ctrl+N are now handled in all situations.
- Expansion with the Mouse
Correction of a problem that occurred
when expanding with the mouse in some applications.
- Client Applications
The treatment of automatic spacing has
been corrected for Meditech (the T.exe variant), AOL, Lotus 123, Visual Basic,
and Agent. A new client application was added: Palm Desktop.
