WP 8 Merge Code. Macro?

I'm interested in taking a merge field i.e. FIELD(12) in WP8, and only displaying the first character of the merged data when merge is complete. Is there an automatic way to do this? Perhaps a merge code I'm missing or a macro? Thanks.
