Word creates several varieties of border lines when you

type 3 asterisks, hyphens, underscores, equal signs, pound signs, or tildes. Go to Tools/AutoCorrect/AutoFormat As You Type tab and clear Border Lines to turn this feature off.

To get rid of the line, position your cursor on the paragraph mark above the line, then go to Format/Borders & Shading and select None.
