As you mention, the underscore and the vertical bar convey a special meaning when they are the very last character of an expansion:

The trailing underscore is used to convey that you do not want any automatic spacing nor automatic capitalization after the given expansion.

The trailing vertical bar is used to convey that you do not want any automatic capitalization after the given expansion.

These indicators are deprecated and likely to be suppressed in a future version because you can now achieve the same goal with the more explicit commands {NoSpacing} and {NoCapitalization}.
