Using a variable function with Autocorrect

In transcription, when somebody spells their last name, I am supposed to hyphenate the letters as they are spelled, so it would be "w-a-s-h-i-n-g-t-o-n". The problem is that typing out "w hyphen a hyphen" et cetera is a very slow process. (In fact, what I do currently is type out "Washington" and then key my way back to the beginning of the word, and press "right hyphen right hyphen" through to the end of the word.)

Anyway, what I would like is a "hyphenate that word" macro. The problem is, of course, that the word could be any number of letters. So is there a way to count the number of letters in the word I just typed, (so washington: X=10) go back to the beginning of that word, and then do "{right arrow}{hyphen}" X times?

Thanks.
